Last week, Henry and I traveled over 2,000 kilometers to several towns and villages in southern Uganda we had not yet been. We were very close to the border of Tanzania in the district of Isingiro. We had four different teaching opportunities in well-organized groups put together by people we have previously worked with in other parts of Uganda. Although the trip was quite long with difficult driving conditions,it was very rewarding to present the teachings and the books to these people for their ministries. We were able to present the entire series of 12 books in each of these villages.

The following posts will provide you a glimpse into our world of traveling and teaching, and I hope you will enjoy seeing some of our times on the road. Thanks for your support and prayers which make these distribution trips possible. You are appreciated and loved!

TEACHING THE WORD

Henry and I were glad to receive the teaching help of others on this trip. Dan, a student at a nearby university spent 4 days teaching with us. His friend Nelson, also a college student from Mbarara, has interpreted for us in the past and this time in addition to his translating, he wanted to help out by teaching; he did a great job. Innocent is a Congolese refugee living in Kampala and working with Navigators. We met him at the Orality Workshop last month and he coordinated the meeting at the Congolese settlement. He was a great translator in Swahili. Teaching 12 books four days in a row can be tiring. I am thankful for the additional help Henry and I had.

AFRICAN PRAISE AND WORSHIP

Certainly, a very special part of our travels and ministry has been to participate in and enjoy the traditional African worship experience. There is dancing, singing, drums and much expression and joy. Unfortunately, these few pictures don't adequately tell the story.

VILLAGE CHURCHES

Over the years, we have been in many different churches in Uganda. This recent trip shows well several examples of the churches we see and visit.

Fourth Village Church (sorry, I don't even know the name of the village. We were 2.5 hours off a main road.) The orange tarp on the roof gave a beautiful glow inside. This hosting church is grateful that they had recently moved to this new area because no vehicle could get to the previous location! I loved this church.

This is the inside of a typical village church. It was small and had plastered walls. This church was not too far outside of the large city of Mabarara and was the first place we met last week.

We learned several interesting facts about the church pictured below which is in the village of Kamwenge. When this church was started the members faced a great deal of persecution from the Catholic churches and the Anglican churches because they were threatened by the loss of some of their members. But these people were steadfast and their church is established and they are building an enclosed mud building behind this open area. They told me I was the first white person to visit in that area. (A local photographer with a very old camera came to take my picture with many members and families!! My claim to Fame!)

The church below is located in a very large Congolese Refugee Settlement Camp. There are several refugee settlements in Uganda. This was our first time at this one. The church building was actually constructed in the past by Ethiopians. Most Ethiopians have returned to their country and many of these Congolese had only been here about 6-8 years. As you can see, this building is quite large and substantial.

TRAVEL EXPERIENCES

I continue to marvel at God's protection as I have traveled by vehicle thousands of kilometers throughout this beautiful country. A small percentage of the roads are paved. Although the main roads from Mityana to Mbarara in southern Uganda were good for the most part, the travel from Mbarara each day to four different locations was on dirt roads. Some were rough as a washboard; others were muddy; some were okay. Travel is always an adventure and sometimes a harrowing experience. On this trip we were almost to the Tanzania border in a place called Isingiro. I am always thankful and grateful to God for safe journeys!

STUCK!

I suppose the amazing thing is that this was the first time I have gotten stuck in the mud in all of our travels, and we have been on MANY DIRT ROADS. This particular incident happened after leaving the third village group. We had already driven over 2 hours on dirt roads when we came to this one where the mud was particularly soft after a light rain. The moment we entered that section, the vehicle just slid to the side as though it were rolling off a tray. Grateful to have 4Wheel Drive, I didn't expect a problem getting out, but the shoulder was deeper than it appears and the vehicle could not get back onto the road. After 10-15 minutes, Henry suggested that I try to drive the shoulder till it ended and get back on the road. That worked and we were back on our way.

Further ahead, an African traffic stall, as the prisoner in yellow to get the cows off the road. There was a nearby prison and various prisoners were out tending herds. I didn't notice any supervision in this place.

AFRICAN FOOD!

Everyone looks forward to the meal at the end of each teaching workshop. Women start early in the day preparing the food, cooking it and then serving us in the late afternoon. In three of the villages, they were able to get a few forks or spoons together for the visitors to use. If none are available, I eat the Ugandan way, with my fingers--- hot beans and rice can be challenging!! But, in case, you are wondering, I find the food good, and I am always able to eat a respectable American portion although there is no comparison to an African's full plate.

The last village provided us with a huge feast of many Ugandan foods: G Nuts (small peanuts), Irish potatoes, greens, beans, millet, cassava, matoke, cabbage, boiled beef, and even pasta cooked in tomatoes!!

In the third village, these women prepared a small portion of French Fries, along with the boiled potatoes, rice, cassava, beans and other foods. The Fries were greatly enjoyed!

IMAGINE ACTS MINISTRY--WORKING!

June and July were no different from other months. We stay quite busy between the children's ministries, church, Sunday school, village ministries, and book distribution trips. ( I continue to do poorly at timely postings to the blog.) I am tired of my own excuses; however, on top of my procrastination, we have been going long periods without electricity. Far worse than I have ever seen it, 12-30 hours at a time several times a week. The good news is that the weather has been quite pleasant, so we can be comfortable without fans; the bad news is that my computer battery is dead and the computer works only when the electricity is on. I have been working on this post since Monday; it is now Thursday night a 7:30. TIA--This is Africa!!

I was able to take a 3-day rest and prayer retreat a few weeks ago, on my own in a peaceful setting about 3 hours from home. It was a lovely opportunity to spend time alone with God and I enjoyed the rest and quiet.

You must realize there is no way I can truly capture in pictures or words all that is happening here, but I hope you will enjoy seeing some of the pictures.

EXCITING NEW POSSIBILITIES!!??

Peter, Henry and I traveled to eastern Uganda in late July to attend a workshop presented by The Navigators, an international Christian organization. Chuck Broughton, center in photo, was facilitating the workshop on various methods for improving Oral Teachings of scripture. I met Chuck, who is from Colorado Springs, in Baton Rouge late in February of this year when he was teaching in Angola Prison.(he uses the books there, too.) He took a set of the books and has been showing them in his travels this summer in other African nations, Angola, Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, and others. After the conference, he told me that teachers in those nations are asking for copies of the sets of books. We met, Mvula Mvula, the Orality Leader of The Navigators for Africa, on the far right below. He lives in Malawi and told us he had been given a set of the books by Chuck and he, personally, is using them and sees them as "a great resource for Africa!" He would like for us to come and do a workshop with the books in Malawi! We ask you to join us in prayer for God's guidance for future ministries with the books. I enjoyed the conference and Chuck's teachings very much. It was a nice break to be the receipient of teaching!! We learned techniques we can use in our book ministry.Thanks, Chuck!

BOOK MINISTRY CONTINUES

We have been traveling to districts and churches where we had previously distributed books in order to complete the set. Last week we met with two different groups, one being a large Congolese Refugee Settlement we had previously visited in 2009. The hosting pastor told us there were many churches in the settlement and one cult. He was disturbed because the cult issued newsletters and magazines with pictures and the Christian churches did not have something similar for teaching. He expressed his gratitude with a new boldness as he tucked his set under his arm prepared to teach with the illustrations in his books! We have two more trips planned for August and several in September. We receive several calls a week from others inviting us to come to their districts and do a teaching. Now, when we travel, we are really loaded down with so many sets containing 12 books each.

NEW CHURCH

In late May a group of us decided to start having church in my front yard. The two American families who are living here joined us as well as many Ugandans. After meeting at my compound for over two months, we have moved to the missionaries' compound where there is a larger shaded area . Also, with my travels with the books, I was often not home. They willingly agreed and Eric is working with the young men in getting everything established and going since he is experienced in church-planting. These photos were taken in my yard.

SCRIPTURE MEMORY CLASS

At the beginning of the second term, the missionary, Krisann Pease, and I started a Scripture Memory class on Wednesday afternoon with the students. The students learned 14 scriptures, and two weeks ago, we held the first scripture competition drill. Twenty-two students participated and the dining hall was full of fellow students who came to watch and cheer them on. All did a great job and the competition was fierce. Phiona received 2nd place and Isaac and Lillian tied in a bonus round where they each had to recite all 14 verses without error. All students received a sweetie when they had to leave the stage---so everyone won something! It was a great afternoon, and we are so proud of what the children have learned.

VISITORS BRINGS BLESSINGS

The first week of June, my sister Diane came with her 14 year-old granddaughter, Ellen Feringa from Covington. From the moment they arrived, they both threw themselves into every activity with the children and ministry work. Ellen was amazing with all of the children and blessed them in many ways. The children have only one campus uniform to be worn after school. Most of the uniforms are tattered and torn and many children do not have one. When they learned this, Diane and Ellen worked together in the states on getting all 65 children a similar play outfit to wear every day. Ellen gathered donated navy uniform shorts for the boys from her previous school in Covington and great plaid skirts for the girls. Diane brought new tee shirts in assorted dark colors. Everyone was fitted and blessed to have a new outfit. They looked wonderful; however, it is difficult for children to have only one after-school outfit to be washed weekly.

Diane and Ellen went with us to visit our special friend, Muyontole, who is always excited to receive visitors. They took him bread, sugar and tea, all special treats. Ellen taught the girls at the orphanage to make multi-colored yarn bracelets. Just being together was lots of fun for everyone. We all wish they could have stayed a month! So much to do--so little time! Thanks for coming and sharing with all of us in Uganda.

LOVE OUT LOUD PROJECTS

Learning scriptures, studying Bible stories, attending Sunday school lessons are certainly all part of anyone's spiritual growth. But through all these methods, we try to get all of our workers and children to understand stepping out in obedience and love is most pleasing to God. My great joy is to see the young people and children seeking ways to " let their lights shine in such a way that others will see their good works and glorify their Father who is in heaven. " Matthew 5:16. Because so many of them want to participate in these projects, I have asked them to become aware of those in the community in great need. This time we had three such projects. The children share testimonies in Sunday school about the project with the other children.

LIGHTS SHINING BRIGHTLY

When Brian saw a crippled man in our area on the road begging for food, he went to his home to see about his needs and circumstances. He brought a plan to me of how he and the children could help, and that very day everyone went into action.

The man's greatest struggle was climbing up into his room because there were no steps. As we looked around the orphanage, we realized that we had some bricks and sand remaining from building projects for the children, so everyone agreed, "Freely you received, freely give."

The small children back at the orphanage began loading the bricks and packing sand into bags to be taken to the older boys who were on the site prepared to unload and begin work. There was no road directly to his home, so the boys had to haul the materials in by wheelbarrow. My vehicle served as "pick-up truck" and I was the driver. It was a grueling day for all, but everyone was filled with joy. In the late evening, Brian and I went to town to get a few things for the man while others prepared his room and bed. Brian bathed him,put new clothes on him, picked him up and laid him in a freshly made bed with new sheets and blanket. I think each person, including the old man, went to bed feeling that he had been the one most greatly blessed that day.

AN ACT OF COMPASSION

Late in July when Timo noticed an elderly man struggling to get water and food, he spoke to him and followed him back to his home to assess his needs. For the past 6 or 7 years, he had been living in a hut he had constructed of various accumulated materials. On a Saturday , Timo took several of his friends from school with him to give the man a helping hand. When they arrived, they realized the man was close to death and needed to get to a clinic. Timo called me, and as he and the boys carried him down the hill on a narrow path, I met them on the closest road with the car.
They took him to the hospital where he was given and IV and admitted. Later that afternoon, Timo and Iwent to the hospital and to the market to buy sheets and a blanket, as the hospital does not provide anything, but the bed. We made up his bed, talked briefly with him and prayed for him. He seemed to be comfortable on the soft sheets and bed, thanked us and smiled.
On Monday evening, the doctor told Timo he was discharged. Timo and the boys took him back to his place and Timo left a neighbor the medicines to give to him the next morning. Sadly, when the neighbor went on Tuesday, the man was dead. There was no family, no service, no coffin. Some neighbors dug a grave opposite his hut, wrapped him in the new sheets and blanket and buried him. The boys came just as he had been buried and we prayed.
We were comforted to know that in his last hours of life, he had known compassion, kindness, and gentleness. This experience had a profound effect on some of the young men.

Brian and Lillian organized a work day to help their 95 year old grandmother who keeps 14 grandchildren by herself in her home. The grass needed slashing and general clean-up, and a few items were needed: soap, jerri-cans, and clothing for the children. Again, we had been blessed when friends from Texas gathered and sent a trunk of clothes for us to distribute in such a time as this. Boys worked on the clean up and Lillian carefully put together something "new" for each child. All of the children were so happy.

Imagine Acts Ministry has now completed the 12 books in the series, Creation to Christ, which was begun in 2008! All illustrations and printing has been done in Uganda. Now, the distribution works begins!! It was fitting that on the day the final book was picked up in Kampala, Tonny, Peter, and Henry were all with me. Those same three were with me in 2008 when we picked up the Creation book! Their faithfulness from beginning to end has been amazing and appreciated! At the Printers in Kampala

VILLAGE BOOK MINISTRY IN NAMA

For two years on Sunday afternoon, we have met with a growing group in Nama, a village about 20 minutes from Mityana. We now regularly have about 18 adults and many children. We have seen much spiritual growth in the lives of some of the group as a result of the teachings. Many questions have been answered and spiritual understanding has increased. In addition, these people have become as family to us, and we have rejoiced in births and stood with them through deaths of loved ones.

BOOKS TAKEN TO KENYA !!

Some sets of the complete series, CREATION TO CHRIST, are now in Kenya thanks to friends, Kathryn and Doug Taylor, formerly from Istrouma Baptist in Baton Rouge and currently serving as missionaries in northwest Uganda. The Taylors and other missionaries from Central East Africa were attending a general membership meeting in Niarobi, Kenya in mid-April. The Taylors gave books to several Class 3 missionaries serving Muslim groups in Kenya and Tanzania. They were not allowed to have their pictures taken, so Kathryn and Doug stood for them holding the books. I know many of you are happy to see Doug and Kathryn! They have been wonderful ambassadors for the book ministry, both using them and sharing them with others.

FROM NEAR AND FAR

With the 12 book series now complete, IAM is working on getting the books into the hands of pastors, church leaders, and Sunday school teachers. May 11-12, Henry, Timo and I traveled to Apac District in central Uganda where we met with men from several districts. Because some of the men had traveled so far, it was necessary for them to stay several nights. Imagine Acts Ministry provided 15 foam mattresses for the men and several meals. It was our pleasure! These men traveled 8 hours on their bicycles to meet with us and receive their books. They traveled from Oyam District and left home at 9 in the morning. They were just arriving at 5pm when this photo was taking. I was overwhelmed! We had driven 8 hours in the car and I thought that was long. How humbling!

These men had traveled from Moyo by bus, taxi and bicycle-hire to get to Apac. They spent 3 nights before going back.

Closer to home, in April, we met with leaders in the Mityana area for a Saturday workshop. Henry is speaking to the group after lunch.

May They Prosper in Body, Mind, and Soul

Approximately 25 students from the upper classes are now attending the Bible Memory Class at the Mityana Orphanage on Wednesday afternoons. Students have made a construction paper booklet where they write out the scriptures for memory. Besides learning and reciting the weekly Bible verse, many have been challenged to recite the books of the Old and New Testaments. They are so bright and eager to learn. Teaching them is a joy and pleasure.Some of the students with their booklets.

The gardens are looking quite good now; the corn is doing well and hopefully we will have a good harvest. Both boys and girls dig, and we usually have about 25 per day working in the garden after school. No digging on Wednesday because of Bible class.

LETTING THEIR LIGHTS SHINE!!

The children from my Mityana Orphanage Sunday School class have received many blessings over the past years. They had another opportunity to give back by serving others with open hearts and open hands. We went to the village of Nama to the home of a poor family with many children. The boys hoed, burned the weeds and trash, widened the paths and cleaned the compound. The girls bathed and scrubbed every child, clothed them in a "new" used outfit, nourished their skin with cream, and cleaned their toenails and fingernails. The following day in Sunday school they shared their experiences and testimonies with the other children who eagerly await their time to GIVE BACK! Spending time with the children in this service of love is one of my favorite things! Boys at work with weeds!

THE NEW WATER TANK

A few weeks ago, we were able to install a 10,000 litre water tank at the Mityana Orphanage thanks to donations for that work. Gutters were installed for collecting the rainwater from the roof. Since this picture was taken we have added a concrete surround about 5 feet up to protect the tank and we hope to add a concrete pad to protect from mud as water is collected. Water is flowing!! We hope and pray for enough rain to fill it up!!

IRENE

Irene is a 10 year old whom we have known for 2 years as she and her mother, Eve and siblings are part of our Nama group we meet with every Sunday afternoon. One Sunday afternoon, we were told that Irene had fallen from a banana tree and broken her arm. Because she lives in the village, she was not brought in to the hospital, but instead was taken to a local "healer" who applied herbs to the arm and wrapped it in a soiled bandage. When we saw her, the bandage was so tight, it was like a tourniquet and her hand was so severely swollen it looked as if it would burst. We took her that Sunday evening to Dr. Boaz, a doctor we have come to trust here in Mityana at a private clinic. When he unwrapped the arm, there were huge blisters on the skin. He was unable to treat the break until the blisters were healed and the swelling reduced. About 10 days later, we brought her back to the doctor for treatment of the severe break. Irene had to have the arm "manipulated" into position; no surgery was done; she wore a cast about 6 weeks. The arm has not healed perfectly, but there is no doubt, she might have lost the arm had she not received better care. Irene has the prettiest smile and dimples you have ever seen, and we love seeing her each Sunday. Her mom was so grateful, she shared cassava stems with us which were planted in our garden at the orphanage.

BRIAN'S BURN

One Thursday morning in April, Henry drove up to my house with this 6 year old boy sitting in the backseat. On the previous Monday, Brian had been burned when he was accidentally knocked while holding a cup of hot porridge at school. The grandmother whom he lives with took him that day to the local government hospital where treatment should have been available and free. She was told there was no medicine with which to treat him and she would have to go and purchase it. Since she had no money, she took him home with no treatment. On the fourth day, his condition had obviously worsened and he could not open his eyes. He was so swollen and frightened when I first saw him. Henry, the grandmother and I quickly took him to Dr. Boaz at a private clinic where Brian was hospitalized for 3 nights and his wounds were cleaned and treated. He improved dramatically. Total cost was less than $50. We checked on him regularly at his home and noted the changes in the pictures below. We are so grateful for any donations made to medical needs.

I AM Back in Uganda

Having spent the first two months of the year in the U.S. waiting out the results of presidential elections here in Uganda, I arrived back at my home here on Thursday last week. The president, in office for 25 years, was re-elected. Although there have been verbal protests to the fairness of the elections, for the most part we have not experienced major trouble. Small demonstrations have been immediately halted by both the army and the government. I am happy to update you through this blog with the activities of the ministry of Imagine Acts as we enter 2011.

Be amazed with us at the fruits of God's provision and your donations and contributions! Since September of 2008, 1500 copies of Books 1-11 have been printed. Many of the first six have been distributed throughout Uganda, and many are stored in my extra room as we plan future distributions and teaching!

IAM is indebted to you for your prayers and support since Stella English and I first founded Imagine Acts Ministry for the purpose of developing a culturally relevant series of books teaching chronologically Creation to Christ to the nation of Uganda. This ministry has truly been one based on faith. We praise God for His amazing abundance, direction, and provision!

Book 12, unfortunately, is not quite finished. There were minor but necessary changes and additions to a couple of illustrations,but as soon as the art work is complete, we will rush to the printer. Hopefully, the book will be in our hands the end of the month. I am glad to be back on the ground to personally push this forward and approve the final copy. I am pleased to report that ministry and teaching continued in my absence with some distributions taking place and on-going village ministries meeting.

These next months will be spent seeking God's direction for the continued distributions and teachings of the series and then proceeding forward. We look forward to the day sets are distributed throughout Uganda placing the books into the hands of the people and the message into their hearts. Thank you for walking this incredible journey with us. We still need your prayers for the way forward!

ORPHANAGE

On Sunday, 65 children attended Sunday School. I wish you could have seen and heard the beautiful singing and witnessed the hearing of God's Word. It is wonderful to have these books to use for teaching as we prepare for Easter. Book 11 beautifully illustrates the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

Tuesday evenings will be the time for English Bible reading and study. We are in need of Bibles the next time someone comes from America. Many of the Bibles were given out last term to the older students who have now graduated from Primary School and have left the orphanage to board at another school

Wednesday evenings will be a class on Bible Memory. We met yesterday to prepare construction paper booklets and learn the first verse: Ps. 119:105 "Thy Word is a light to my feet and a light to my path." We hope to learn the books of the Bible and practice locating books and verses. There were 25 who signed up to be in this class!

Final News--Our New Dog

We were all saddened when my German Shepherd died earlier this year while I was in the states. When I arrived at my compound last Thursday, I realized how eerily quiet the nights were and determined that we would have to find a new dog; however, quickly locating a suitable dog in Uganda is not always easy. Through both answered prayers and contacts, we were able to secure a new dog on Saturday. January and I drove to Kampala to meet Simba2, a five month old German Shepherd. We love him already and he is adjusting great; time will tell if he will prove to be a good guard dog. Our guard dogs are trained to work at night patrolling the compound with January and barking and alerting him to any suspicious sights or sounds. They are tremendous comfort to me as I live here alone.

Food and Water Shortage: We were informed by news text on Monday that the Prime Minister had issued a danger warning due to a prolonged dry season thereby causing a shortage of both food and water.

Pray for the current situation in Uganda regarding food shortage and extremely high prices.

Book Ministry--New Places, New Friends, Fellow Laborers

October and November brought opportunities to visit new districts in Uganda. We also had the pleasure of receiving a great group of five volunteers from Grace Church in Austin, Texas.

In early October I met with approximately 50 pastors studying at the Baptist Seminary in Jinja. We distributed the first six books and teaching study guides to pastors from Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Congo and Uganda!
In late October we traveled to southwest Uganda to Bushyeni District where Dan Douglas had coordinated a training and distribution session. The pastors there received us and the books with great enthusiasm, and we enjoyed being in this beautiful, fertile section of Uganda.
In mid November we traveled with our volunteers to meet with a church in the Rift Valley and participate in a walk-about to invite new people to a book ministry group the church was starting.
Last weekend, we traveled to Masaka District about four hours away for training with pastors from four to five different nearby churches. Henry Lutwama and I had the privilege of preaching Sunday in two of the churches. Our contact person there is Pastor Abel who is the Vice-president of the Baptist Union of Uganda. I look forward to working with him in 2011 for distribution planning. There are 2,000 Baptist churches registered in Uganda!!
Many people have been reached, much love has been shown, friendships have been forged. Thanks to all who gave of themselves to the Ugandan people!

This pastor was in his 80's and had suffered persecution and prison for teaching the Bible in earlier years of strife in Uganda. He carries many physical wounds of his tortures. It was very sobering to be giving this man of God teaching resources. We had much to learn from him.

On November 12, my sister Sally from Austin along with two members of her church and their young daughters arrived for a whirlwind of activities. It was a pleasure to host them in my house, and I am pleased to report that no one ever complained about power outages, trickly showers, or food. These five poured themselves out for the people of Uganda and gave of themselves tirelessly. They spent hours at the orphanage teaching children, visiting with them, playing games with them, and doing amazing art projects. They traveled great distances over sub-standard roads participating in book ministry trips, walked locally in door to door visitation to invite people to an on-going book ministry group, and even sampled the local delicacy--Grasshoppers! They brought a bag full of sweaters to distribute to children living in the colder region of the Rift Valley. They made S'mores with the children at the orphanage, kept score and cheered at the Bible Quiz Bowl, and invested in the lives of the children and others by giving lovingly and willingly of themselves. They brought Light and Love to all of us and we thank them.

On one of Dan Douglas's visits to the Rift Valley in October, he saw that many children there had no sweaters although the temperature is much cooler there than other parts of Uganda. We sent the word out to our friends at Grace Church in Austin who brought a duffle bag full of sweaters for the children. Last Sunday, three of our young men with IAM were invited to teach a small congregation and a group of five pastors of area churches using the Creation to Christ book series. Both the books and the teachings were very well received. The young men spent the entire day with the people and the pastors and were repeatedly told how much "this type of teaching is needed in the churches today!" They were complimented for their "teaching" rather than "preaching." All of us associated with Imagine Acts Ministry are thrilled to begin to see the realization of the vision of Ugandans teaching Ugandans through the Creation to Christ book series. Great things are happening and we are encouraged to press on to completing the series by the end of the year. On Saturday we will travel to western Uganda to Bushyeni to meet with a group of 15-20 church pastors and leaders in that area for a teaching and distribution.

Farewell, Dear Friends

In late July, we lost our dear friend, Margaret, who was the founder and director of the Mityana Orphanage School. Though small in stature, Margaret had a huge heart for children and an iron will to see that they were taken care of. Over a thousand people came to the orphanage to pay respects to Margaret at her burial. There will never be another like her. We miss her daily.

Our Wonderful Friend, Teresa

Many friends in US followed the story of our friend Teresa who lived in a village near Nama. Early in 2009, when we met Teresa, we discovered what appeared to be a terrible wound on her heel. Many of the young men of IAM took care of cleaning the wound and bandaging it each week as we prayed for healing. However, after several months, we knew that the heel would need surgery and through donations from US, we were able to secure a place for Teresa in a private hospital in Kampala with a good surgeon. Once the affected area had been removed, the diagnosis had been melanoma. Our faithful worker, Dan Douglas, went several times a week by bicycle once Teresa came home to clean and care for the large open wound. The wound never became infected and healed nicely.Everyone in the village was able to witness the love of Jesus through Dan's efforts as well as other young men with IAM. In December of 2009, Teresa had a terrible accident at home when her outside kitchen structure collapsed on her burying her under debris. When I saw her again in 2010, I could see that she suffered with many pains and was losing weight. We began a book ministry group at her home in Nama where we taught many people in her village every Sunday. I believe that the people who come to that study week after week have been able to observe and witness first hand the love of Christ- seen through actions of young men who lovingly washed Teresa's foot and cared for her. Just three weeks ago, while I was in US, Teresa was taken to a clinic in Mityana with stomach pains and fever. Two days later, she died. I believe that God extended Teresa's life in order to bring glory and honor to His name through the faithfulness of the ones who selflessly cared for her. We already feel the loss of her presence.

Extreme Makeover!! Mityana Orphanage August 2010

The pictures speak for themselves! What a joy for IAM to bring this wonderful blessing to the children at Mityana Orphanage a few months ago. A generous donation was made to renovate the old chicken coop into a large dining hall with outside covered pavilion. The project began when Bernie Boudreaux from Austin, Texas who designed and supervised the work, and a volunteer team from UT came to "break ground." The work continued for several weeks until we celebrated our first Sunday lunch in the new dining hall on August 8, 2010. New dining tables and benches were made, new plates and cups purchased, and two water filter dispensers were purchased. A special meal was prepared and we had a grand celebration. This wonderful all-purpose facility is already being used for many other activities---Sunday school, English Bible, homework room, game room, place of nightly prayers and devotions---truly a Blessing that will go on and on. Thanks, everyone!

The children at Mityana Orphanage have been blessed these past two years through many gifts which have improved their living conditions---a renovated kitchen, new mattresses, sheets, blankets, clothes for all , and most recently the wonderful new dining hall/pavilion with tables, benches, new plates and cups. Surely ,they have Freely Received!
What a thrill in early August--the very day we had our first meal in the new dining hall---to watch 10 of the children go to Freely Give to an elderly man who lives alone in a mud hut a short distance from the orphanage. Besides his pitiful living conditions, the man was suffering with an infestation of jiggers in his legs and an open wound on the side of his foot.
During Sunday school that day we talked about being Lights, representing Christ, actually being the Church. We read Jesus' words in Matthew 25:31-46---"For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited Me in; naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me." Immediately following the lesson we left the orphanage to put into practice what we had been learning.
Watching these children serve this man by washing his feet, bandaging his wounds, cleaning his house, and taking care of his needs, blessed me and them in a way I will not soon forget.

On Saturday, we went to the man's house to see how we could help him. When we arrived at his house, he was sitting on the ground. He had no chair; he was sleeping with on bits of torn foam using small pieces of thin blankets for covering. Inside the tiny house was a burning fire where he cooked his meals and received warmth. We assessed the immediate needs and ways we could help, and left to gather the things we would need for our Sunday's work.

In early June we went to Nama, a village about 30 minutes away to secure permission from the Local Chairman to take a 22 month old ,very sick and malnourished child back to Mityana with us to be cared for at the orphanage. We had found him in January, but discovered in May that he was very sick. After taking him to the doctor, providing medicine and proper foods, we realized he was not only sick, but quite neglected. Although Mityana does not have an orphanage for babies, Jackie, whose grandmother is the director/founder of the orphanage, agreed to care for him. The grandparents who were "keeping" him after his parents abandoned him, were very eager for us to take him. We signed papers with the Chairman. I didn't realize until later that the papers read that the child had been turned over to Imagine Acts Ministry!! This is not an official adoption; the grandparents are free to get him any time they choose. We want to help him get healthy. He is very loved by all of the children and the adults. He was renamed David---and often called King David! It has been a joy to see him improve and smile. These past three weeks have been extremely busy, as usual.

Book Ministry is going well but always slower than I wish. We are teaching the first 6 books through Moses and The Exodus in several places. On Saturday, June 12, Henry, Timo, and I will travel to Jinja, about 4 1/2 hours away to the seminary to have a mini-workshop with pastors and distribute books. As they are busy with course work during the week, we will meet Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon with those who are interested in having the books for a resource. We have always been very well-received there by the pastor/students who are anxious to have teaching materials. We will leave Saturday morning at 8am and return sometime on Monday.

There was a problem in the printing of Book Seven, so it is being reprinted and should be ready end of next week. Book Eight is ready to be printed, also. We are trying to get reprints of The Creation; the printer at the University has made two attempts, but there were many errors and they are trying once more.

We are getting great testimonies from those who are both teaching the books and learning from them.

At the fishing village on Tuesday, a Muslim woman invited one of the young men into her home to teach her. We are still sorting out the various challenges and trials in that village.

Children Ministry is keeping me busy. English Bible classes at the orphanage are going great. We are now in Luke 16. The reading is improving, the English is getting better, and I know that the Bible lessons on Jesus's teachings that the children are reading will be life-changing. We have 18-20 on Tuesday and Thursdays. I am expecting more Bibles to arrive with a group coming June 23. Maybe soon, each student will have his own Bible. Sunday School continues to go well. We are studying the book series and learning many English songs. Two Sundays ago, I had 50 children ages 4-24!! What an exciting time that has become! This group was previously unreached in a Sunday School.

Chicken Project is over for now. The chickens stopped laying eggs and we were only feeding them. We sold them for a good price and hope to be able to start up again with new chicks in the near future. The children are definitely missing the eggs and we are sorry for that loss of much-needed protein.

Pig Project is still on hold. We are waiting for funds and a suitable place to house the pigs.

Vegetable Garden is supplying the children with fresh beans, cassava, and sweet potatoes--all welcome changes in mealtimes. We also have Irish potatoes and eggplants planted.

New Dining Hall will hopefully get up or at least off to a good start when a volunteer team of 8 arrives in 10 days from University of Texas! They are willing to help construct and paint and we are hoping to make much progress with their assistance.

There is certainly no shortage of work that can be done here to nurture the Soul, Body, and the Mind. Thank you for your prayers and support and encouragement.

Little Baby Boy

The new baby David spent his first night at the orphanage on Wednesday night sleeping in a twin bed with Jackie and her baby girl, Hannah. When we drove up at dusk on Wednesday night, the children from the orphanage all came running to see him, hold him, and love him. He won't lack for attention here and both KrisAnn and I checked on him like nervous grandmothers on Thursday morning. KrisAnn and her husband Eric and their two children, Emily and Colby came to Mityana in November of 2009 to reopen a former missionary post here. It has been fun getting to know their family.
I am holding David in the top picture inside Margaret's house yesterday evening. He is quite tall,but very thin. those are size 12month pants we bought in the market and he has them pulled up to his waist. In the second picture, Jackie's daughter Hannah is sitting next to David. She has just turned 8 months old. David is 20 months.

A Mission of Love

We have been concerned for quite some time about a very ill little baby in the village of Nama. The little boy was abandoned by his parents and left in the care of the grandparents. We discovered him in January of this year, but didn't know the full story. In May we found that he was seriously malnourished and dehydrated. We took him to the hospital, bought medicine and food and gave the grandmother instructions for his care, but on subsequent check up visits we found him still suffering and often alone or in the care of small children. Dan and Timo had discussed the possibility of bringing him to the orphanage in order to nurse him back to health. Although there are no babies at the orphanage, the director, Margaret gave her permission for us to bring him. Timo and Dan also received the permission of the grandparents for us to take him. Jackie, Margaret's 25 year old granddaughter, who is also my houseworker, agreed to care for him. So on Wednesday, Dan, Timo, the missionary KrisAnn, her two children and Jackie and I loaded up in my vehicle to go to Nama and make all arrangements.

First, we met with the grandparents who were eager for us to take him; however, we wanted to meet with the LC, Local Chairman of that village, to prepare a document so there would be no misunderstandings as to our intentions. He is free to go back to the grandparents at any time. The LC was attending a burial ceremony, so we all tramped through the bush to find him. After preparing the document and stamping it with his credentials, we were on our way. We brought the baby to my house where we gave him a good bath with Johnsons baby soap. We bought baby petroleum jelly to put on his very dry skin and scalp. Kris Ann happened to have a can of powdered baby formula and one 3month size onesy outfit, which ironically had written on the front: "my mom is the best." Although he is 20 months old according to the grandparents and has a mouth full of teeth, he is very underdeveloped and quite small. The 3month outfit was too big and we had to ducktape the size large diapers we had picked up. (we have since bought size small) The only clothes we could quickly find in the village market in Mityana were also too big for now. But we will manage.

The child's name is DEO, but Timo had suggested that we give him a new name. He and Kris Ann decided on David, which of course, was fine with me. Henry calls him King David.

Timo remarked to me as we were walking out of the village with the baby, "Maybe one day, this baby will grow up to be a great man." (It is important that you know, that Timo became an orphan at age 2 and has grown up in his grandmother's orphanage. And all who know him believe that one day, he, too, will be a great man of God.) Please pray for David. He has a very long way to go to begin to stabilize. Thank goodness, the missionary family is going to take him tomorrow through the weekend to carefully monitor his food and liquid intake.

The Blessing of a New Vehicle!

Many thanks to all of you who have prayed for and made contributions towards a new vehicle for the ministry. On Monday, June 7, we picked up our Toyota Land Cruiser Prado fresh from Japan through the port of Mombasa in Kenya.

For those of you who know me well, I have always loved cars and enjoyed having a variety of new cars over the years; however, NEVER before have I been so thankful and thrilled to have a vehicle as I am now. I LOVE IT! Although this 4wheel drive is 16 years old, a 1994 model, it is considered "new" in Uganda because it has never been driven on these Uganda roads before. I thank God for it each time I drive it and pray that it will be a continued blessing for our work here. The Rav 4 engine blew up two weeks ago, and it has not been able to be moved from the mechanic's garage, but we think we have a buyer. Many of you know Kathryn and Doug Taylor who came in January to the Uganda mission field. They serve with their three precious children in northwest Uganda in Aura. They were staying in Kampala on Sunday night, as I was, at the Baptist Mission Guest House. It was such a wonderful blessing to see them and visit with them as we shared our experiences, joys, and trials. Kathryn and I had come on the same volunteer trip with Istrouma in 2007; Henry, our project coordinator had been Kathryn's translator. They enjoyed seeing each other again.

Clean Water---Not for Everyone

It is hard for us in America to realize that not everyone in the world has access to clean water. My preferred water source at my house is rainwater which runs off the roof into gutters and into a large holding tank. From there it is run through pipes into my house. I am always thankful for every rain that keeps my tank full! In 2008, city water became available to some homes in the area. I also have a city water source which we use for washing clothes. As you can see in this picture, it is not always clean. Many Ugandans have installed faucets for city water.The water you see in the basin came directly from the faucet; we were not able to use it for washing that day. The orphanage only has 2 medium rain-holding tanks and 1 small one to provide drinking, washing, cooking and bathing water for over 85 people. They also have access to city water when it is available and clean! It would be a blessing to install more tanks when money is available. (cost would be less than $1,000) When the rain water is depleted, children must walk 2 hours to bring back a small jug of water. How can we be surprised when so many suffer with typhoid!

I arrived Uganda on Thursday, May 20, 2010 after a very busy, quick, but wonderful trip to Louisiana, Texas, and California. Upon my return, I felt that I had never really been away. The same friendly faces of co-workers and friends were here to greet me, and the same problems and needs were waiting as well. I was immediately faced with several medical needs which could not be ignored. In the village of Nama where we held book ministry on Sunday, we found a seriously malnourished baby who had been abandoned by the parents and left in the care of a very poor relative. Although the baby looked to be about 6-8 months, he was in fact, 1 and 1/2 years. We arranged to pick him and bring him to a local private hospital on Monday where Dan, my faithful worker,who longs to be a doctor, stayed with them throughout the visit making sure the relative was clear on the doctor's diagnosis and instructions and blood work. The baby's visit, lab work, medicine and necessary food items totaled about $20.00. I don't believe the baby would have survived without care much longer. But now we are concerned that the relative will be able to properly tend to him. Dan went out on a motorcycle this morning to be sure the medicine and food were being given properly. When he arrived, the relative had gone to the garden to work (away from the home) and the baby boy was left in the care of small children. Dan sent for the relative and was able to talk with her. We will monitor the care during this week. The doctor told Dan that with proper food and care, the baby should be well in 4 weeks. Our second case concerned our dear friend, Margaret, who is the founder and the director of the orphanage.She has been very weak and sick for some months with various ailments, mostly arthritis, but is now quite ill. Yesterday, we made arrangements to get her to a private clinic as well. She is suffering with malaria and typhoid. She was quite agitated and disoriented yesterday but is better today. I took her Pepsi, chips, boiled eggs, and gatorade--trying to entice her to eat. She has no appetite. Margaret is well-loved in the community and by her many grandchildren. In September she will be 75 and it is my prayer that she will be healthy for her birthday.

It is a bittersweet to meet these few medical needs. Glad that we can do even some small good,but bitter that the Ugandans don't have better medical care.

Dan worked this afternoon sorting through our cold meds, ibuprofen, band-aids, etc. which we dispense often.

English Bible Class

On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, I teach English Bible at the orphanage and we are reading the book of Luke---slowly. But the children seem to be learning great truths from the word, plus English. That teaching is one of my favorite activities. On Wednesday, I return to the orphanage in the evening to have Bible story with the 70+ children who live there, and on Sunday mornings we study the Creation-Christ books in two Sunday School classes. Those children are Learning!!! And teaching them is my joy and pleasure!

Two Saturday Groups

This past Saturday we began a new ministry with some Congolese men who are well-known by my guard, January. We expect two more to join us this Saturday. The younger man, John, said it was so easy to understand because of the pictures. The other picture is from our Saturday group which has been meeting about 5 weeks. We began the Abraham book Saturday.

Workshop on Books

Last Thursday, eight of us met at a local hotel/restaurant where we went through the five books in preparation for teaching in various places. The man at the end of the table is a pastor of a newly formed Baptist church, so he was joining us. We met him at our Saturday neighborhood group. Julie was also present there as well as some of our faithful workers for the past two years. It was a great time to be sharing together. Interestingly, we were seated at the same table where we met in January of 2008 to edit the books with our Ugandan council of young men--and now they are a reality being used for the glory of God.

Greetings. We are very busy each day teaching and sharing with both children and adults. The books are a great resource and appreciated by all ages. On Fridays, we teach at three schools--one kindergarten, one primary, and one secondary. Pictures below are taken at the primary school and kindergarten. We sing and read from the books. At these two places, we are still on the book of Creation. At the primary school, the teachers wanted us to teach outside because it was so hot that day and the classrooms were too warm. There was a nice breeze outside and the perfect setting for teaching about God's creation. Truly, the Garden of Eden must have resembled Uganda in its lush beauty. About 10 minutes into the lesson, the students near the back jumped up and began to run, which of course created instant chaos. There was a small black cobra which had slithered into the group. After throwing bricks and getting an ax, one of the boys was able to kill it and throw it aside. We moved to a different place with lower grass and continued with our singing and lesson. I love going to these two schools. In the afternoon on Fridays we walk back to that village where we meet with older students. We still use the Creation books, of course, but the teaching is totally different and appropriate for them. They are very responsive to the teaching. I did not get a picture of that group, but when we left there were a number of students outside practicing traditional Ugandan dance and music in preparation for parents day on Sunday. Every day is a full one here and many great things are happening. We have started several new ministries using our books and we enjoy those times with the people so much. We have all ages present, and because we are sitting outside on mats, people who are passing by will sometimes stop and join us. Today we began a new ministry at one of the nearby high schools. We had a good group there and will meet with them once a week. Tomorrow we go to two more schools, one with very young students and one primary school. It is exciting to see how we can use this wonderful resource for teaching in any setting for any age group.

My car is in the garage for two weeks so I am back "footing" it again, but I do enjoy walking in the villages. The Moses book is FINALLY at the printer and should be ready by 3rd week in March. The other illustrations for the next 5 books are coming along great. I can't imagine that possibly by year's end the 12 books will be complete. That is our goal--please pray that God continues to bless this project. In the pictures below, Eric, Julie and Dan and I are starting out to walk to the school this afternoon. It was about a 30 minute walk each way and the view from the top of the hill was lovely.

Thanks to all of you who wrote with concern about the devastating mudslide that occurred in Uganda on Monday. The affected area is in eastern Uganda on the Kenyan border near Mt. Elgon and is one of the most densely populated areas of Uganda. As of today's figures, 81 have died and over 350 missing. My district is expected to have heavier rains for a longer period of time this rainy season which will probably wash out many dirt roads. I am sending the picture of the home across from me so that you can easily understand how quickly these homes can wash away. This a typical home for so many Ugandans. The top picture is the outside kitchen and store room; the bottom is the house.

Evening tea was started this week. Children receive hot milk and sugar at 5:15. They were gathered on the grass waiting for our Bible lesson and the milk. They enjoy the milk so much. Thanks to all of you who donated money specifically for milk for these children. They will have it seven days a week. Wednesdays and Saturdays are boiled egg days, so they are beginning to get some much needed protein. They are happy and most are healthy.

Group 2--the older students. After a great review of the first 3 books, Creation, Disobedience, and The Flood--we learned that God is Always looking for Faithful men who would Walk with Him, Talk with Him, Listen to Him, and Obey Him--thereby Honoring Him. Our lesson for today was on the 4th book Abraham, and I think they learned a lot. It was wonderful to go back to pictures in the first three books to grasp the concept of "fellowship with God"--what that looks like, and also to see in Disobedience, what sin does to that relationship with God. After studying half of the book of Abraham, time was up and we all stood to sing the crazy song "Father Abraham has Many Sons....."

They love it and it has lots of motions with it. It was great fun.

It was a wonderful day, and I can't wait for next Sunday. These three in the picture, Moses, Alex, and Babu, came first and started looking through the books--these pictures weren't "set up." They love looking at the pictures.

Sunday School at Orphanage Feb.14,2010

Today was our first day to have Sunday School at the orphanage. I started at 9:30 with the young ones and we sang songs and began learning about God from the Creation Picture Book--the basics---God loves Me; God created the world; God is the provider; God loves praise and worship. Timo, who lives at the orphanage helped with the translating and the teaching. It was a good time to be with these little ones who often get lost in our other studies. We had a good rain during this time and we were really able to Praise---it has been so hot and dusty here.

I am not sure if it was the teaching or the rain, but one little girl fell sound asleep before we ended.

We sang "Praise ye the Lord, Alleluia", "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands"," My God is so Great!" and "Jesus Loves the Little Children."

Prayer, Bayer, and Chicken Noodle Soup

I just had to share this. As I was leaving the orphanage late yesterday, I was told that Jack was very ill. He was burning up with fever. Knowing he would get no appropriate treatment from the hospital, I brought him home. Dan Douglas was here to help me. Jack's temperature was 103.5. We cooled him down with water, bathed him, put new clothes on him. I heated up a Chicken Noodle Cup of Soup, gave him 2 pieces of bread and a half liter of mixed Gatorade. He ate it up. We prayed over him, and put him on the sofa to rest and wait. We were all in the dark as the power had gone out. When we next took the temp. it was 101.5. We took him back to the orphanage for the night. Dan checked on him this morning and found him dressed for school and with a temp. of 97.7!! We give God the glory and the thanks, and are grateful we were able to show him some TLC with Chicken Noodle Soup, a good bath, and clean clothes!

Book Ministry----We are excited about a new plan to distribute the Creation to Christ books through the Baptist Seminary in Uganda located about 5 hours from my house. Our plan is to travel about once a month to meet with pastors as they rotate in and out for their 3 week sessions. At the end of the year, we should be able to get books in the hands of over 500+ pastors from 5 countries--Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Rawanda, Congo. Although I will have those long trips, I will cut back for now on the extensive travel we did in 2009. I will miss traveling to the villages and the bush--but this makes more sense at this time.

We will begin reprints of the first book--Creation.

The artist is working on the next drawings and I have developed a time-line for completion which I will go over with him in a meeting tomorrow---same with printer.

Orphanage---we had a great week with the children last week. On Wednesday the 3rd, we met for our first Bible lesson of the new year. (they are just beginning the new school term) We talked of God's great love for us, as shown through the Creation Book, and His commandment that we "love one another." We are hoping and praying to construct an all-purpose pavilion for meetings and dining, so we don't have to always be on the dirt ground without protection from sun or rain. I will be teaching Sunday School there beginning this week, Wed. will still be Bible lesson and we will have an English/Bible lesson once a week for the older children--studying Luke.

Chicks---we had to do significant renovation to the chicken coop--adding windows, enlarging windows, adding a screen door. Hopefully, the increased ventilation and sunlight will improve the overall health of the chicks and aid in production of eggs. And now the children are all back to assist with the on-going daily work.

Gardens---we are ready to plant--just waiting for the rainy season to begin.

Piggery--at this time, the piggery project is on hold until we get the chick project manageable and profitable, but we are guarding your gifts and donations and will keep you informed.

Christmas in February-- on Thursday we distributed gifts to the children--Teddy bears or Beanie baby, toothbrush, sponge, pencil. The children quietly waited their turn for their gifts and held it in their laps as we continued to distribute. They seemed very pleased and expressed their appreciation and thanks. Thanks to all of you who contributed to this--especially the Girl Scouts of Austin and members of Grace Church, Austin!

Milk--now that the children have returned we will make a plan for providing milk for them--straight from the cows--several times a week. Thanks for your contributions for that project.

Bible Study--we began a Bible study of Acts in my home last night. We will meet on Monday evenings. Last night was a great beginning with 6 present and lots of contribution and insight. Pray for the faithfulness of that group.

IAM meeting tonight with the 4 young men here who work in our ministry. Tonight will be a time of evaluation of 2009 successes and failures and challenges and course of action for 2010.

Thanks so much to Robin Cook who visited with us for two weeks--teaching, advising, participating,and loving all of us. We will miss her.

One of our hopes and prayers this year is to build an all-purpose pavilion for the children to use as a dining room (they currently eat sitting on the dirt or ground), study room, and meeting room--for our Bible lessons. I will be trying to get an estimate on the cost of a simple open, but roofed structure. Pray that God provides that for these children. If we had not built this narrow veranda they are sitting on now, they would be sitting in the dirt. And, for a teacher, it is difficult to keep everyone's attention, when half of the group is wrapped around the side, out of sight. But we manage.

Praise and Thanks

On Monday, January 18, Brian, a nineteen year old orphan, came to my house very ill with temperature 102.6 and too sick to take any meds. I gave him some chicken broth, a coke, lots of water, and two aspirins. Two hours later temperature was 104.4. We sponged him off with cool water from a basin and it came back to 102.4. He had been in the hospital on Sunday receiving a drip and was given some unmarked tablets to take. He never took them; he was so sick and was afraid he would vomit. Realizing the lack of good medical care here, four or five of us prayed for Brian and asked God to heal him. We promised God we would give Him all of the praise and glory when Brian was healed. He had a rough night, but by morning the fever had left him and he was well! So far, no relapse! So we praise and honor God for His care and healing of Brian. "In the day we called, He answered us."
